At the end of the promontory, bathed in a pale gray light
A carefree wisp of a girl walks, her hair blowing in the breeze
As she quietly struggles up the cliff face to the shining beacon
Where her father works alone in the strong, majestic tower
She thinks about the ship that just last week calmly sailed
Out of the safe, enclosed harbor into the hungry ocean
She places a soft little hand upon the warm, worn stones
Of the tower as she skips around to the wooden door
Framed by dewy green branches of shiny leaves
The tower's light had just received a new lantern
When the sudden winds from the north had overcome
The brave little pinnac
they were so quiet
staring with glass eyes
beckoning
me
forward
through a hallway of alabaster arms
--at the end, a Grandfatherly smile--
come in, my child, come in...
i'll buy you a balloon for some candy,
come in, come in...
ahead of me the moon cavorted
over foaming waves of milk
behind me, no one
but whispers of breathing and sighs...
you should be asleep by now,
come in, come in...
